Tips for Moving In Together

When you’ve found your person, there’s one milestone that is on par with getting married. That’s right, we’re talking about moving in together! Deciding to live in the same space can really put your relationship to the test — after all, as the saying goes, you never really know someone until you live with them.

If you want to ensure moving in together goes smoothly, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Agree on a Space

Is your significant other going to move into your space, or are you both going to move into a new, neutral space? While a neutral space offers a clean slate to begin a new chapter, if one of you is stuck in a lease or mortgage, you may want to simply move into that home.

Talk About Legal Matters

If you and your partner are not married, it may be wise to have come cohabitation papers drawn up so — in a worst-case scenario — you are both financially and legally protected when it comes to dividing assets.

Do a Test Run

Especially if you’re moving into one of your existing homes, test living in that same space for a week or two. You’ll be able to experience each other’s daily routines, cleaning and cooking habits, etc. If either of you gets frustrated about the other’s living habits, you’ll at least know and be able to adjust plans before signing a lease or mortgage.

Take Inventory

As of now, you both probably have your own bedroom, living room, kitchen, and dining sets. But since you don’t need (and may not have room for) for two of everything, both of you need to sit down and decide what’s moving into the space, what’s being put in storage, and what is being junked or donated.

Divvy Up Chores

Right from the get-go, you both should decide who is doing what chores and when. Maybe, you decide to switch off taking out the garbage each week, and that whoever cooks dinner will do the dishes. By figuring out the chore schedule from day one (and sticking to it) you can avoid any disagreements down the line.
