Our clients have called us many different versions of the name College Hunks; names like "hunky haulers," for example, which is a distinction based on physical attributes alone. But, did you know that the "HUNKS" in College Hunks Hauling Junk® and College Hunks Moving® is actually an acronym that goes way beyond mere physical appearance?
Not that we mind the "hunky hauler" moniker — we are, after all, able to lift couches, large appliances, and other heavy items — but HUNKS actually stands for: Honest, Uniformed, Nice, Knowledgeable Students.
The reason for the acronym is that, unlike most hunky haulers and movers, our former team members have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, business owners, professional athletes and more, proving that each one of our HUNKS really is a future leader!
HUNKS on Shark Tank (and Selected for Dragons' Den)
Having such great men and women working together to build the College Hunks brand has brought us many opportunities, each of which we owe to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in the company.
Our brand has been in many publications and on many television shows over the years. We've appeared on everything from Bravo's Millionaire Matchmaker and TLC's Hoarding: Buried Alive to AMC's The Pitch and various business news shows across the country.
Perhaps one of our most-remembered appearances according to our clients, though, is the time we were on the very first episode of ABC's Shark Tank. We didn't get to make a deal with the sharks, but it was a great experience nonetheless, and people still mention seeing us on that episode.
We were also later selected to be on the Canadian version of the show, Dragons' Den. Unfortunately, due to a scheduling conflict, we were unable to make the Dragons' Den appearance.
But how did we get here? How did we get to the point where we could turn down such a great opportunity as appearing on Dragons' Den? It all started with a beat-up cargo van…
The Origins of College Hunks Hauling Junk
On a hot summer day in 2003, a group of college buddies borrowed a beat up cargo van and dubbed themselves College Hunks Hauling Junk®.
People in the neighborhood would call the "College Hunks" for anything that involved strong backs and a truck. Word quickly spread about a group of friendly, intelligent college students who could help move, donate, recycle and dispose of people's items.
By 2005, the company became operational and a business was born!
In 2007, College Hunks began franchising and, as a result, took off across the U.S.
So what's the next step? Today, we are looking to expand our brand into Canada. Not only are we looking for passionate people with all sorts of backgrounds to own and operate College Hunks franchises throughout Canada, we're also looking for talented entrepreneurs to become Master Franchise Owners within our system.
