2020 Was A Success Despite COVID-19

February 26, 2021

Our Franchisees Had A Banner Year

Despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving® and our franchisees had a banner 2020–growing revenue, jobs, efficiency, the number of franchisees, and our community outreach programs.

In 2020, as the leading stress-free junk removal and moving franchiser, we added 40 new franchisees to our franchise network. The new franchisees received uninterrupted corporate support in the form of onboarding, pre-training, and training so they were able to complete these processes and launch their own businesses as soon as possible. Pivoting quickly to implement new best practices that would limit the spread of the virus, College HUNKS’ franchise owners were successful last year proving to be leaders in our industry and demonstrating that our industry is not only recession-proof but also pandemic-proof. We made a few highly effective adjustments to our business model per recommendations from the experts and what has become the new normal:

  • Curbside junk removal
  • Express curbside junk removal
  • No contact quotes
  • No contact payment for services

Success is in the Numbers

This strategy delivered spectacular returns for our brand. In 2020, College HUNKS’ systemwide revenue grew 17% year over year despite moving services being halted for a while in some markets. Our franchisees’ net income as a percent of revenue increased 39% year over year in 2020. College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving’s Net Promoter Score (a metric used to measure customer loyalty) increased to 86, up from 79 in 2019. College HUNKS’ average job size for moves also increased by $31 per job year over year, while the franchisee average acquisition cost per job decreased by 12% year over year.

The corporate-supported Sales and Loyalty Center booked 313,000 jobs for franchise owners in 2020, up from 278,000 in 2019, and the Center’s overall booking activity increased from 68.2% in 2019 to 75.4% in 2020. In addition, the call center generated $4.8 million in additional revenue in 2020 from Open Leads (individuals that did not book on the first call to College HUNKS that we reached back out to).

Although these numbers are great, pandemic or not, our typical business is even more robust in non-recession, non-pandemic conditions. We look forward to furthering the brand’s success on all fronts as we emerge from the challenges of running a business in COVID-19.

Giving Back in 2020 Made a Huge Impact

At College HUNKS, our purpose-driven, socially conscious efforts are perhaps our greatest achievement in 2020. Throughout the nation, our franchisees and the corporate team coordinated efforts to help our communities in numerous ways and have continued with many of those programs. We are honored to give-back at every opportunity we have and in 2020, this included providing meals to those in need; moving medical equipment to assist our local healthcare workers; storing donations to be given to non-profits that were temporarily closed; helping students move out of dorms unexpectedly; and helping domestic violence victims who urgently needed to move during the pandemic.

One of our proudest achievements in 2020 was helping over 100 individuals leave their abusers when we began offering free moves for victims of domestic violence. "To me, it is a huge honor to be a part of someone’s new transition," Jasen Denton, a mover and estimator at College HUNKS in West Seattle. "No one wants to be in a situation where they’re harmed or they’re hurt."

Looking Ahead

We are taking all safety precautions necessary at College HUNKS to ensure the health of our team members and clients. We are following the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) recommended measures, have instituted employee temperature checks, masks are being worn on every job, and our teams are disinfecting trucks after each job. Beyond monitoring the situation and adjusting when needed, we also consulted with local public health officials, and established protocols that mandate each franchise location must practice new safety measures.

In addition, we continue offering our innovative junk removal services and full-service moving services so no one will be stranded during this already difficult time. As a national transportation, logistics, and waste hauling company, our trucks and teams of HUNKS are assisting with the transportation of needed supplies, warehousing and storage, bulk trash and dumpster alternatives, waste and refuse disposal, and delivery of goods to businesses and homes wherever needed.
