What was your career before College Hunks?
I just retired after 37 years with one company, and was in sales and marketing and training the entire time. I retired as the head of learning and development. So I’ve always done lots of teaching, lots of training. Then at the same time, I’ve been teaching one or two evening classes per semester over at the local university for a little over twelve years, in the business and human resources areas.
What did you find appealing about the College Hunks opportunity?
Well, I started tutoring when I was in college, so I’ve worked with college students my whole life. So, I’m used to college students. The College Hunks brand has four key values, one of which is building leaders. That really resonates with me. I mean, I am the kind of person who likes helping other people. I get satisfaction in seeing people grow and seeing light bulbs come on in their heads.
Are you going to continue teaching while you build your College Hunks territory?
Yeah, for one class a semester.
How did you initially find out about College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving?
From a franchise consultant. I had been looking at local businesses and I wanted to move rapidly, because when I retired recently, I found out from my CPA that if I made the right kind of investment, I could call back a lot of money that I’d already paid Uncle Sam. So I thought, “Wow that’s great,” looked at a lot of local businesses, I talked to people who knew business owners, and I really wasn’t seeing what I liked. So, then I started looking at franchises and contacted a franchise consultant.
How many opportunities did you look at?
Four. I spent a considerable time on all four and, after a little while, I decided two of them weren’t really good. I went down two tracks all the way through to the end and was going to Discovery Day and I said, “You know what? I wake up and I read about College Hunks, I think about College Hunks, it’s 180 degrees different than what I’ve done.” What I did before was suits and pretty shoes and ties, and I was ready for something different.
What was it about College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving that was so appealing to you?
I really liked two things about College Hunks. The first was I really, really liked that they have a sales loyalty center that is the frontline for interfacing with customers. For what it costs me, I couldn’t hire even a fraction of an employee for that level of service.
The other thing that I really liked was the system, which the more I learn about it, the more I really like it. I was also really impressed by the College Hunks Hauling Junk franchise cost. Because if somebody were to go out and say, “I’m going to do something on my own,” and they’re going to create a system that had a quarter of the firepower and 20% of the utility of what we have, they would spend two years, employ tons of people and spend a couple million bucks. There’s zero question in my mind that this is a great business to be in.
