Q&A With College Hunks Hauling Junk Franchise Owner Martha Vaughn

Female entrepreneur finds success with a scalable business model that allows for growth in many business sectors

undefinedSuccessful entrepreneurs always have their eyes open for opportunity. When Marty Vaughn was on a flight, headed to explore a franchise, a magazine article about College Hunks Hauling Junk caught her eye. Soon she was looking at a junk removal and moving franchise as her next business opportunity.

Now that she’s gotten her Lexington, Kentucky, franchise up and running, she’s eager to talk about why College Hunks Hauling Junk has been the right choice for her, and why it’s an opportunity that can work well for women looking to start their own business.

What were you doing before College Hunks Hauling Junk?

Before I began my career as a “Hunkette,” I was the community outreach director for the Woodford Humane Society, where I trained and recruited volunteers, planned and organized fundraising events and managed the off-site adoption opportunities. Event management was a perfect stepping stone to small business ownership, as it taught me how to juggle priorities, anticipate bottlenecks and expect the unexpected.

I looked at several franchises, and I really like the energy of this company. There is great flexibility in marketing — they really encourage creativity. It’s a fun environment, and it’s great also to see a company that promotes from within.

What sets your College Hunks Hauling Junk franchise apart from independent moving and removal companies?

College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving offers a fun, responsible and reliable solution in the junk removal and moving industry. Our commitment to the community and environment, as well as our collegiate workforce, sets us apart from other companies.

Are you the only woman-owned hauling/moving business in your area?

As far as I know I am the only one.

What do you need to do to be successful in this franchise?

In this business or any business, you need the patience of 1,000 Tibetan monks. Success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes focus, hard work and dedication. The franchisor provides plenty of support to ensure success.

How are you growing your team from within?

My goal is to continue to hire college students. When they are on the job, they have to manage labor costs, so they learn a business skill right away. They learn business management, even if it is just that truck for that day.

Who are your main customers?

There are a variety of clients who appreciate our stress-free service, from empty-nesters to growing families to office managers to landlords. Luckily for us, clutter doesn’t discriminate, so we’re happy to offer service to clients in each stage of their lives.

How do your customers feel about College Hunks Hauling Junk’s strong commitment to the environment?

We want our clients to feel good about where their junk is going. We classify every item for donation, recycling or proper disposal, and they appreciate that.

The first priority is to see if anything we pick up can have a second life at Goodwill or another nonprofit. Then it goes to recycling, and whatever is left ends up at the landfill. We make every effort to make that the smallest amount possible. Nationwide, College Hunks recycles or donates 60 percent to 70 percent of all of the junk removed from residential and commercial locations. My goal is to exceed this percentage in the Lexington area.

What does your business’ typical day look like?

I’m not sure that there is a “typical” day, as each day holds a plethora of surprises. With caffeine in hand, I usually start my day by checking for urgent emails, dispatching the teams and following up with the previous day’s clients. Updating the metric boards, setting up interviews, networking with colleagues and scheduling the teams are all on my to-do list, as well as dealing with the day-to-day surprises that accompany any small business.

What do you like about the business?

Every day is an adventure with opportunities to lead, learn and grow.

Would you recommend this franchise? Why?

I would recommend College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving to budding entrepreneurs. As the franchisor continues to grow, there is an exciting opportunity to influence the policies and procedures that may become standard for new franchises.
