Kelsie Ackman Featured as a “Franchise Legal Player” by 1851 Magazine

Kelsie Ackman, Vice President of Franchise Development and General Counsel at College H.U.N.K.S. Hauling Junk & Moving®, recently spoke to 1851 Magazine about her experience as a franchise attorney and her top concerns regarding the future of the franchise industry.

Here are some of the highlights of the interview:

  • Regarding the questions franchisors and franchisees should be asking when vetting potential franchise attorneys, Ms. Ackman says to ask how long they have been practicing franchise law, what their relationship is like with other franchisee/franchisor attorneys, whether they are a member of IFA, if they have their CFE, and whether they prefer arbitration or litigation.
  • Ms. Ackman says that minimum wage increases are one of the top concerns for those in the franchise industry because it will substantially cut into owners’ margins. Ackman also noted that franchise concepts are hit hard during recessions, as well as the importance of keeping the standard for joint employers the same it has been for years.
  • Speaking about what she is most optimistic for in the franchise industry over the next year, Ms. Ackman said, “The sheer growth and development of franchise brands. It’s a booming industry and I can’t wait to see how many more new concepts open up over the next year.”
  • According to Ms. Ackman, the most rewarding aspect of her work is not just being a “legal advisor to our company, but also a business partner to her shareholders.” “It’s rewarding to watch both employees at headquarters and franchise owners around the world make their dreams come true all by working for a brand we believe in that gives so much back to the community and people around the globe,” said Ackman.
