The Hazards of Moving on Your Own

Unless you are a trained professional, moving can be hazardous to yourself and your home.

Health Strains

Moving can put a strain on your body in many ways. You’ll typically feel fatigued and drained after your move. Picking up and moving items forces your body to move in ways it’s not used to. Even if you’re strong and fit, this can lead to back or knee injuries due to unfamiliar movements. Moving can also induce stress and anxiety.

Prized Possessions

Many items need to be packed in a specific way to minimize damage. For instance, plates should be packed upright and plasma TV’s should never be laid down. If you don’t know all of the ways items should be packed, you can risk damaging your valuables. Also, trips and spills sometimes occur if you’re not aware of your surroundings. Thus allowing your items to break. Professional movers also have the materials to properly wrap your furniture.

Home Damage

Most people don’t own the proper protection for your home. Different flooring requires different protection. Movers create pathways out of the proper material that allows you to walk on, move furniture across, and roll dollies on, without causing damage to your floor. Banisters require crafted banister protectors or furniture pads to protect from scrapes. There are protectors created specifically for protecting door jambs. And hallways and walls require Masonite or cardboard protection. Typically, people don’t possess all of these items, but professional movers do.

Automobile Damage

Cars, trucks, and vans can be damaged when trying to move on your own. Boxes or furniture can scrape the outside of the vehicle, sharp items can tear or rip the upholstery or carpet, or large items can damage your seats if they’re being moved in the wrong way.

Time

Time is a valuable commodity. Professional movers are experienced in the art of moving, so they can get the job done quickly and efficiently. You may estimate a job to last so long, but without seasoned moving experience, minutes can turn into hours.

Moving on your own can incur many hidden costs and can even be hazardous to your health. Weigh the pros and cons and consider a professional moving company next time you move! Not sure where to start? Check out this blog post about Questions to Ask a Moving Company.
