5 New Years Superstitions for Luck
Here’s the list of the top 5 New Years superstitions that are supposed to bring you good luck throughout the 2013 new year!
Whether you believe in superstitions or not, these 5 New Years rituals can become fun traditions in your house. Plus, it never hurts to cover all your bases!
According to ancient lore (and my grandmother), the first time you wash your hands in the new year should be with coins. Apparently, this ritual will bring you fortune throughout the year. At the very least, you’ll have clean change and keep your piggy bank from getting food poisoning.
Speaking of piggies, grab a fork and chomp some pork. This tradition says that you’re supposed to eat pork on New Years Day. The reason? Some believe it’s because, while poultry scratches backward and cows stand still, pigs root forward (therefore, whoever eats pork on January 1 will “move forward” throughout the new year).
Others will tell you that it’s because chickens scratch in the dirt for their food so if you eat chicken, you’ll be left “scratching” for your meals in poverty.
Still others will say it’s just a ploy by the all-powerful sauerkraut industry to push their addictive cabbage products. Who knows.
In this superstition, you open the windows at midnight on New Years Eve. This lets the old year out and the new year in. Seems logical. Just make sure you crank up the heat first. Otherwise, you’ll be a 2013-cicle until Spring.
Once you’ve opened the windows, it’s time to get loud. The myth here is that you have to make as much noise as possible to scare away any bad spirits (which is actually the same reason church bells are rung at weddings). Personally, I’m guessing there’s a more… liquefied… reason behind this (people tend to get loud when they’ve had tee many martoonies).
Probably the most well-known and widely accepted tradition, kissing at midnight is supposed to ensure that the rest of your year is filled with love.
At the very least, it’s an excuse to get a smooch, so why not?!If you need a hand with your post-party cleanup, give College Hunks a call at 1-800-586-5872 or schedule your stress-free New Year service by clicking right here!
