My Office: Jeff Johnson has a 'recycled' office
When Jeff Johnson hit a plateau at his previous job, he decided to check a goal off his bucket list by starting his own business.
In September, Johnson launched a local franchise of College Hunks Hauling Junk.
Located on Indianapolis' Northeastside, College Hunks removes unwanted items from homes and businesses, as well as moving services.
"I wanted a challenge. It felt like now was the right time," he said.
Johnson furnished his office with items acquired from other jobs. His desk, file holders and bookshelf came from offices the company cleaned out.
"People don't just get rid of junk. They get rid of things that are very good," he said.
As the company's only Indianapolis office, College Hunks serves the entire metro area. In the next year, Johnson plans to continue to build his brand, hire at least three employees, purchase another truck and double revenues.
"We are seeing evidence of the real estate market bouncing back. As that happens, we expect business to pick up," said Johnson. "I'm very optimistic about our growth."
Why did you want to franchise?
I didn't want to take on the full risk of starting something from scratch. I wanted to be in the service industry. I researched opportunities for about a year, before deciding on this one.
They have a business model that is proven. They are a wealth of knowledge and information. I felt I had a greater chance of being successful.
Why did you choose College Hunks?
The culture. They put an emphasis on employees and clients. They are all about making sure employees are satisfied as well as clients. The internal culture is fun and enthusiastic.
Are all employees in college?
No. they don't have to be. I have two in school and another who just finished his bachelor's degree. I'm looking for personality and attitude, first and foremost. If you have those two things and can lift 150 pounds I'm going to give that more weight than college affiliation. We will work around college schedules.
Why did you want used furniture for your office?
Most everything has been a result of something we've picked up on a job. The only exception is the printer, laptop, white board and mascot.
It's a good representation of how things can be reused. We don't just want to talk the talk, but walk the walk.
