Curve Appeal: What Is It and Why Do You Need It?

February 14, 2022

What Is Curve Appeal?

For the past few decades, interior design has relied mostly on straight lines and basic shapes. This is the most functional way to design furniture, but it isn't always the most aesthetically appealing.

This isn't to say that there's anything wrong with your straight-lined furniture, but it might be time to change it up during your next home decor revamp.

Curve appeal is the usage of curved lines instead of straight lines. This means that the backs of couches, the sides of chairs, your tables, and a lot of your other interior design elements will be curvy.

This was a popular trend in the seventies and even back in the twenties. Now, in the 2020s, we're bringing it back.

Why Opt for Curves?

What's the appeal of curve appeal?

Curves bring unique shapes to your interior design. They look both modern and vintage, so they're great for any minimalist home that's in need of something "extra" to add visual interest.

Curves also give a softer look to any home. They're not as harsh as straight lines and edges. They're great for rooms that are supposed to be comfortable, like living rooms and bedrooms.

How to Incorporate Curve Appeal Into Your Home Design

How can you jump onto the curve appeal trend? You don't have to have a completely curvy home to switch up your interior home redesign project. Here are a few ways that you can start bringing curve appeal into your home.

Mix and Match

Don't try to switch all your furniture and accessories over to the curve appeal trend. Not only is this a waste of money, but you won't be making the most of your curvy new items.

Mixing and matching curves with edges is a great way to create a unique space. You don't need an entire home full of curved objects. Sometimes even having a single curvy centerpiece is more than enough.

For example: we love the look of one curve-backed couch in the center of a room that otherwise uses straight lines and edges. It makes the couch look more unique.

Accessorize

If buying new furniture isn't an option right now, or you're still attached to the furniture that you have, you can still hop on the curve appeal trend with accessories and decorations. This is a more functional and affordable way to bring curves into your home.

Start with your wall accessories. Swapping out square frames for circular or ovular ones will create a modern and trendy look.

Have you been looking for a full-length mirror? Choose one that's arch-shaped and lean it against your wall for a soft look (and a perfect selfie spot). We recommend surrounding it with round plant pots and your favorite plants.

You can also buy curvy decorations to adorn shelves and side tables. They're sleek, modern, and unique.

Do you have a rug in your room? Swap it out for a circular or ovular rug.

When it comes to accessories, don't be afraid to go too bold (especially if you aren't changing your furniture at all). A few bold pieces won't overwhelm the room.

Pick the Right Placement

With straight lines and edges, it makes sense to place your furniture up against the wall. When you have curved furniture, this isn't the best option. There will be space leftover and you won't be making the most of the design.

We recommend finding places to put your curved furniture center-stage.

A small dining nook with two curvy chairs and a round table will be subtle, but effective. Place the furniture over a curvy rug to make the space even more interesting.

Place your couch in the center of the room (if possible) and add no more than two standalone curvy chairs, one on either side.

Get creative with your placement. You can think outside of the box!

Home Renovation Options

If you're building a new home or you can remodel the home that you already have, you may decide to incorporate curve appeal into the interior design in a whole new way.

Remember, curve appeal is a trend. Make sure that you're really a fan of it before you make any permanent changes to your home's interior.

Consider adding round arches to the entryway of your hallways and anywhere that doesn't have a real door. This is an easy (and timeless) way to "round out" your interior design.

You can also add built-in shelves with round tops. These look great in living rooms and kitchens.

Go Vintage

One of the best things about the curve appeal trend is that you can find vintage furniture pieces and decor items that will fit in perfectly. This is great for anyone who loves thrifting and the thrill of "the hunt."

Not only will vintage items save you money, but they're also more sustainable and you'll be able to find items that are truly unique.

Are You Into the Curve Appeal Trend?

The curve appeal trend isn't for everyone, but if you're tired of the same old lines and edges, it might be for you.

Start slowly by incorporating a few curvy design elements into your home. If you love them, it's time to go furniture shopping and overhaul your entire space.
